Icon IPL Laser Q&A

What conditions does IPL treat?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) uses light energy to improve the texture and condition of your skin. Dr. Carretero and Maggie use IPL therapy to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Dark pigmentation
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Rosacea
  • Unwanted hair removal

How does Icon IPL therapy work?

With IPL therapy, Dr. Carretero and Maggie use the cutting-edge Cynosure Icon device to deliver pulsed light energy deep into your skin.

This light energy focuses on pigments inside your skin, increasing the temperature of the pigmented cells and breaking them up into small particles. Your body naturally eliminates these particles through its lymphatic system.

IPL can also stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin, proteins that improve the texture and appearance of your skin, removing fine lines and wrinkles while smoothing your skin’s texture.

What happens during an IPL treatment?

When you arrive at Lower Highlands Dermatology for your IPL treatment, you’re shown to a private room where your treatment area is prepped and cleaned. A gentle numbing cream may be applied prior to treatment.

Dr. Carretero or Maggie then begins your IPL treatment by moving the Icon device over your skin, delivering the IPL energy. You may feel some slight stinging as the light energy penetrates into your skin; many patients say it feels similar to a rubber band snap.

Most treatments take 20-30 minutes.

How do you prepare for IPL treatments?

You should avoid certain things for two weeks before your treatment to ensure the best possible results, including:

  • Sun exposure
  • Tanning beds
  • Waxing
  • Chemical peels
